Queenstown, New Zealand is known as a thrill-seekers paradise, and is famous for its activities that will trigger an adrenaline rush. After all that excitement, adventurers need a place to kick back and relax. During my visit to Queenstown, I found five places any traveler or local can go after an action-packed day.
- Perky’s Floating Bar: Perky’s is a retired fishing boat permanently stationed in the harbor of downtown Queenstown. A small ramp leads customers aboard and a few indoor tables lead to a bar. Local beers on tap, spirits and fresh mulled wine complete with an orange slice help adrenaline junkies wind down with a beautiful view of Lake Wakatipu and The Remarkables Mountains.
- 2. The Minus 5° Ice Bar: This bar made completely of ice is one of two in Queenstown and is changed annually using chainsaws, chisels and hammers. The Minus 5° Ice Bar allows guests inside for one hour before a break, otherwise the low temperatures can be harmful. Equipped with a parka and gloves, cocktail seekers enter a land of beautiful ice designs to sip signature drinks in cups made purely of ice. Though a must-do, it costs 30 NZD to get in and have one drink, so this option isn’t good for travelers adhering to a strict budget.
3. Fergburger: This famous burger joint is known far and wide for its innovative food including the traditional beef patties, as well as chicken, pork belly, venison, falafel and fish options. Crispy fries, calamari or onion rings on the side accompany the option of several beers on tap. Be ready for a long wait, Fergburger is always packed no matter what season, or what time it is. However, most agree that the food is well worth the wait.
4. Rhino’s Ski Shack: Decorated with street art and vintage skis, this basement bar is the perfect place to warm up after a chilly day on the slopes. Mulled wine and hot buttered rum contributes to a relaxing, laid back atmosphere surrounded by deep-house by local talent and professional ski videos. This unique bar even has ski, snowboard and gear storage.
5. Smith’s Craft Beer House: Recommended by locals, Smith’s Craft Beer House has twenty-one rotating taps and a full wine and spirits list to cater to any drinker’s needs. A three story set up has a breathtaking view of the Remarkables Mountains from the top level of the three story restaurant and bar.
